New technology is being tested at Melbourne Airport to see if it can improved detect liquid explosives.
The multi-view x-ray machines and scanners may remove the need for overseas travelers to throw out extra-large containers of liquids
The anti-terrorism requirement has resulted in thousands of containers being thrown out each month.
Federal Transport Minister Anthony Albanese says he hope the new technology can improve the system.
"We really are just exploring whether this advanced technology has the potential to minimize the inconvenience, while not compromising on the high standards of aviation security," he said.
The two-week trial of the new technology starts at Melbourne Airport today and Sydney Airport next week.
